TSA’s REAL ID Fee Starts February 1st:

What You Need to Know

Travelers without a REAL ID might have to pay a $45 fee beginning today, February 1, 2026.

Here’s what you need to know. If you don’t have a REAL ID yet, which is an updated version of a typical driver’s license or ID card, you’ll have the option to enroll in TSA ConfirmID to establish your identity when going through TSA security checkpoints at airports. That includes paying a $45 fee which is valid for a 10-day travel period.

Travelers can, of course, opt out of the program. Other acceptable forms of identification  include a state-issued Enhanced Driver’s License of Enhanced ID, a U.S. passport or passport card, a DHS trusted travelers card (like Global Entry), a U.S. Department of Defense ID, a permanent resident card, border crossing card, Enhanced Tribal Cards, a foreign government-issued passport and more. Those without an acceptable ID will be referred to the TSA ConfirmID for identity verification at checkpoints.
